Travelers Rest or Bust!

Florida Trip 07-08

Dec 27, 2007!

As usual we went into Maryland for Christmas Eve with Kay’s kids at Steve White’s Home. Lil fed us well and the family enjoyed each other’s company. Christmas Day it was go to Mass in Mt. Airy, MD and then off to Frank’s daughter Gina’s lovely home where we caught up with Daryl and Gina as well as Danielle and Billy. Lunch was good and then we headed home in order to pack on the 26th.

We awoke to what looked to be a pleasant day, but we were fooled, it started to rain around 11AM and never stopped until late that night. We did get some packing done, but mostly we staged what was to be packed when the rains stopped.

On Dec 27th we loaded up the trailer with what was staged and then moved the refrigerator to the one in the trailer. We finished the job at 1:40PM and left for FL. The trip to the first stop was pleasant, as the day was real bright and sunny. Kay rode, talked on the phone and rode while Frank drove. We arrived at the Bay Bridge Tunnel rest stop where we are parked for the night. Kay is very happy as we have a site with flowers. Frank is not sure that dandelions are flowers. Later Kay took a walk on a trail next to the rest stop while Frank discovered that we had WiFi. We both went to bed early in order to shake our colds so we could be ready for the long ride tomorrow.

Dec 28, 2007!

Frank awoke at six am and got on the computer to read the news while Kay continued to rest. After Breakfast we left the rest area to use our EZ Pass on the Bay Bridge Tunnel. Twenty-four dollars later we were crossing the Chesapeake Bay and enjoying the sea gulls sitting on the light poles. Then it was time to drive through the Norfolk area using Kay’s directions and ignoring the GPS unit and we were able to navigate the area with no problem. Kay has done her research, she checked with Francis Mason and the clerk at the VA rest stop earlier. All that was left was to go the three hundred ten miles to South of the Border, SC where we camp at Pedro’s campground. We arrived and setup. Then Frank decided to take a nap while we waited for Boots and Francis Mason to join us. Once they arrived we joined them for dinner and a pleasant evening. When we went to bed the temp was 64.6 degrees.

Dec 29, 2007!

We had a wonderful nights sleep with no heat on all night. When we awoke the temp was 65.7 degrees. We had breakfast and uncoupled the trailer from the electric hookup. Boots and Francis left the campground exactly at 8:00am while Kay and Frank left at 8:10am to meet them at the Flying J in Latta, SC just down the road. Frank said nothing to Kay about being late and Kay volunteered nothing. When we arrived at Flying J, Boots had decided to get the diesel at the Hess station as Flying J was too crowded. Frank went in and fueled up while Boots checked out all the pumps before deciding on which one he would use allowing Frank to park and wait for him. Kay just smiled and walked over to talk to Francis.

Then it was back on to the road FL using the air conditioning! We hit a parking lot on I95 at about 15 miles from the SC border so we left I95 and traveled RT 17 for about 8 miles before returning to I95. The traffic jam ended as soon as we entered GA. We stopped at the GA welcome center so Kay could rate the bathrooms and ate our lunch. While there we were entertained by a large flock of cow birds. Then it was off to the campground. When we arrived at King George’s RV Resort the temp was 74. If you the reader believe that I the writer is trying to rub it in that we are warm while you are cold you just may be correct, but just remember we will being wearing our white ribbons to show that we feel your pain when it snows back north!

We went to Mass in St. Mary’s at a very nice church so that we can leave at an early time tomorrow, Frank just looks at Kay and wonders what time early is. While in St Marys, GA we took in the Christmas Lights that the town still had up, which were very pretty.

Dec 30, 2007!

It turned out that it was not Kay who set the time we left, rather it was Boots and Francis who advised Frank that they would not be ready at 8:00 AM. We left at 8:40 with the first stop being the FL Welcome Center so Frank could get his FL orange juice and the proper picture was taken to show that we had arrived in FL. The next stop was at a Wal Mart for lunch before driving the rest of the way to Traveler Rest and an 80 degree day. FL feels good. While on the road to TR we picked up the Cruchleys for a caravan of three trailers to our joint destination. We arrived and hooked between visiting with various friends already in the park.

Jan 5, 2008!

We have survived the two day cold snap and are now back in the low seventies, Life is great as Frank waits for the Redskin game to start and their trek to second place in the NFL. Meanwhile Kay has been lamenting that she and most of her family could not open a combination locked bank that she had bought for Duncan, but she never asked Frank. We were going to take it back to the seller to see what they could do for her when Frank looked at the bank and the combination and promptly opened it. His comment was that all Kay did was lament, lament rather than ask for help. The Bank is open!
